It was not a 'life debt' ...a cultural phenomenon that states you are indebted to someone if they save your life. TV and movies have used this concept to add to the drama, also claiming it as part of ancient tradition or proverbs. Chewbacca became Han Solo's first mate as part of a life debt. And Friday said he was indebted to Robinson Crusoe, but most of us would view being indebted as 'never in a month of Sundays'.
Some have even switched the idea of 'life debt' around, stating that if you save someone's life you are obligated to take care of them. If someone is helpless or in danger, who would warn you not to intervene? We look to policemen, firemen, soldiers, and doctors to do what they're trained to do ...and they do not want you to feel indebted to them if they save your life. Respect for their position, and a simple 'thank you' usually suffices. And when they try to help, and it doesn't go the way everyone had hoped ...we thank them for trying.
And Jake wanted to thank Evan's dad for his son's actions. He was certain it would make Evan's dad feel better too.
And Jake was right. Evan's dad was happy to hear of the circumstances surrounding this true & courageous act of love by his son.
God always knows the circumstances, in advance ...and in love, He sent His Son. Knowing that His Son was going to die ...He sent His Son. And Jesus knowing He was going to die, came willingly ...to save our life.
I don't look at it as a 'life debt' ...it is rather that I am so grateful, I want to serve Him. He took care of the debt of sin, for my life.
Whatever unbearable or impossible situation we find ourselves in ...Jesus wants us to get out alive. To be out of the darkness and alive with Him now, in our heart ...and later for eternity with Him.
Without Jesus, I wouldn't make it.
